The Great War 1914-1918

Men from the Mackay District who gave the Supreme Sacrifice

This list is the culmination of 14 years Research since 1994 and lists all 320 known men to have been associated with the Mackay district.

I have included the following men who meet one of the following Criteria

  • Born in the district

  • Attended school in the district

  • Resided at some time in the district

  • Have family still residing or were residing in the district at death.

  • Enlisted in Mackay

  • Name is recorded on a local memorial or honour board.

The Mackay district defined for inclusion is within 100km of the Mackay Post Office. Therefore I have included men from Mackay South to Carmila, West to Nebo and North to Bloomsbury.

Many sources have been used including:

  • Names listed on local war memorials and honour boards

  • Australian War Memorial Records.

  • Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

  • National Australian Archives Service records.

  • Contemporary newspaper reports from "Daily Mercury" newspaper.

  • Anzac Day reports and supplements from "Daily Mercury" newspaper.

  • Contemporary reports from "North Queensland Register" newspaper.

  • Contemporary reports from "The Queenslander" newspaper.

  • Mackay Cemetery Burial Register and Monumental Inscriptions.

  • Records held in the Mackay Museum.

  • Greenmount Homestead, Cook Archives.

  • Mackay Family History Society Records

  • Local published and unpublished Family histories.

  • Many generous people I have met from finding our site from the Internet.

The purpose of this list is to help obtain further information of these men for the publication of a biographical history of all Men and Women from Mackay who have died in the service of their country.  Volume 1 listing men from the Great War of 1914-1918 I am hoping to get published by November 11, 2008.  Volume 2 will list the Men and women who died in the Second World War and Vietnam .

Can you help??????????

To finalise the project we need :

  • personal stories of the men listed

  • contemporary portraits of the men and

  • images of graves

The publication will be not for profit with proceeds to go to local Veterans groups and the aim of every school in the district to be supplied with a copy of the publication.
